Best of the Year: 1952 - Singin' in the Rain

There may not be a better "feel-good" movie in history. You can't help but smile watching Donald O'Connor jump through a wall and contort his face. You can't help but tap your toe when Gene Kelly gives a master-class in cinematic dance. You can't help but swoon from everything Debbie Reynolds does. Even Jean Hagen's performance as the silent film star with a voice suitable for magazines makes you giggle from start to finish. (side note: Hagen was also the film's only acting Oscar nomination which is one of the biggest travesties in history).

Everything works so perfectly. Acting, check. Singing, check. Dancing, triple check. Set design, check. Comedy, check. Romance, check. Quite possibly the greatest film ever made to be snubbed for Best Picture by the Academy. Read what I wrote 10 years ago here.
