Countdown to Oscar Night: Grand Finale!!

Best Picture/Best Director
Ford v Ferrari
The Irishman / Martin Scorsese
Jojo Rabbit
Joker / Todd Phillips
Little Women
Marriage Story
1917 / Sam Mendes
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood / Quentin Tarantino
Parasite / Boon Joon-ho

Last year I had a bunch of fun writing about how all of the nominees would win, I figured I'd do it again. This year I am adding Best Director to the mix as well. For my Oscar Night countdown grand finale: Why all nine films WILL win Best Picture (and why five of them will win Best Director):
,
Ford v Ferrari will win because there are way more "dads" in the voting pool than we realize. In such a divisive time in our nation it feels good to agree that driving fast and beating Italians is just plain fun. (see: Argo, The Hurt Locker, Gladiator)

The Irishman will win because it is destiny. Martin Scorsese directing Deniro, Pacino, and Pesci in a mobster movie that runs nearly four hours and will be quoted in frat houses for the next fifty years? If you look up "Oscar movie" in the encyclopedia you will see a picture of Pacino on the phone talking about "painting houses". I wouldn't be surprised if everyone involved with this movie had written their Oscar acceptance speeches during pre-production. Martin Scorsese especially should expect to win. Look at that competition! Other than Mendes, none of the others have won directing Oscars (and Mendes won for filming a plastic bag float around). They don't stand a chance. Scorsese only has one Oscar. How is that even possible??? (See: The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, The Departed)

Jojo Rabbit will win because Taika Waititi just applied the "Green Book" strategy to World War II. Make a funny buddy movie tackling a really tough subject. Jojo just replaces southern segregation with Nazi Germany and, instead of a black pianist and white driver, the movie has a pre-adolescent scamp and his imaginary friend Adolf Hitler. I mean... it's over baby... give them the award. (See: Green Book, Driving Miss Daisy, Rain Man)

Joker will win because it made a boat-load of money. It is the highest grossing R-rated movie worldwide of all time. It has ties to comics, 70s classic film and television, clowns, and juvenile "anti-capitalist" sentimentality. Aren't those topics exactly why the Academy Awards were conceived? Todd Phillips will also win best director as the voting bloc will show that Peter Farrelly (Green Book) wasn't a fluke and that they are ready for the 90s fart-joke auteurs to complete their journey to domination of modern art cinema. (see: The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King)

Little Women will win because the Academy is scared to death of #metoo. How on Earth did Greta Gerwig not get a Best Director nod? This movie was produced by three women, stars five actresses in their prime, directed by a woman who also wrote the screenplay based on a book by a woman!  Come on guys! It's right there in the title!  (see: Platoon, but, you know, with women...)

Marriage Story will win because it is the actual best movie nominated......  who am I kidding? It's my favorite movie of the year.... it doesn't stand a chance...  (see: no movie... ever... :(   )

1917 will win because it is the favorite. It checks all the boxes: Golden Globe Best Drama, PGA, DGA, BAFTA, Screenplay nomination, Directing nomination. A movie hasn't lost after being this far ahead and lost since La La Land (see above for why it lost). Sam Mendes will also win because he carried that camera for two solid hours through the fields of France following those two boys 102 years ago. He should get a little credit for that!  (see: every 90s and 00s Oscar Best Picture)

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will win because there is nothing the Academy loves more than celebrating themselves. It's in the title for goodness sakes!!!  Quentin Tarantino will also win for directing because he was smart enough to stop making all those violent, verbose films about folks that weren't actors, stuntmen and directors long enough to make a violent, verbose film about actors, stuntmen, and directors. Give him all the awards!  (See: The Artist)

Parasite will win because everyone on every podcast and website says it is their favorite. Since it was released it has not lost its position as the internet's correct answer to the question "What was the best film of 2019?". Bong Joon-ho will also win best director because he directed "the best film of 2019". The internet said so... so it must be true. Sure, no foreign film has ever won Best Picture (even when it was the oddsmaker's favorite like Roma last year), but no foreign film has ever been the highest rated film for the year on IMDb...  (See: nothing really?)

There you have it... as for my ballot, for the first time in many years I didn't dislike any of the nominated films. Here's the way I would rank them:
Marriage Story
Jojo Rabbit
Little Women
1917
Parasite
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Ford v Ferrari
The Irishman

My Pick to Win (Director)
Bong Joon-Ho - Parasite

My Pick to Win (Picture)
1917

Shamefully Snubbed
Uncut Gems and, of course, Greta Gerwig

That's it for another year of Oscar-crunching! See you on the red carpet!

Countdown to Oscar Night: Acting

Best Supporting Actor
Tom Hanks - A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Anthony Hopkins - The Two Popes
Al Pacino - The Irishman
Joe Pesci - The Irishman
Brad Pitt - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

On an otherwise exciting night, the acting categories this year are pretty underwhelming. Don't get me wrong the performances are stellar, but the winners are locked up. Save for two, there aren't even that many glaring snubs. One of those being in this category as Jonathan Majors gave the performance of the year in The Last Black Man in San Francisco. If you've been reading my blog, you probably have realized by now that I really dug that movie. It is streaming now on Amazon Prime. Go watch it... like right now...

As for the actual nominees, Pitt deserves to win his first acting Oscar (he previously won for producing 12 Years a Slave) for his pitch perfect portrayal of an aging quixotic stuntman. The Irishman is not my favorite, but Pacino actually surprised me and made me wish the movie was just about Jimmy Hoffa.

My Ballot
Brad Pitt - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Al Pacino - The Irishman
Tom Hanks - A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Joe Pesci - The Irishman
Anthony Hopkins - The Two Popes

My Pick to Win
Brad Pitt - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Shamefully Snubbed
Jonathan Majors - The Last Black Man in San Francisco

Best Actor
Antonio Banderas - Pain and Glory
Leonardo DiCaprio - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Adam Driver - Marriage Story
Joaquin Phoenix - Joker
Jonathan Pryce - The Two Popes

Save for Pryce (who can't seem to decide on an accent while portraying Pope Francis), these nominees represent some of the mightiest performances you will see in the new millennium. Joaquin is sure to win for his divisive bombshell of a feature, but Driver, I feel, gives the best performance of the year in the best movie of the year. I can't wait to see what he has in store for us in the coming years.

I never though I'd feel sorry for Adam Sandler, but missing his chance to win an Oscar for the best performance of his life is a plain travesty.

My Ballot
Adam Driver - Marriage Story
Leonardo DiCaprio - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Joaquin Phoenix - Joker
Antonio Banderas - Pain and Glory
Jonathan Pryce - The Two Popes

My Pick to Win
Joaquin Phoenix - Joker

Shamefully Snubbed
Adam Sandler - Uncut Gems

Best Supporting Actress
Kathy Bates - Richard Jewell
Laura Dern - Marriage Story
Scarlett Johansson - Jojo Rabbit
Florence Pugh - Little Women
Margot Robbie - Bombshell

As much as I love Johansson and Driver as the leads of Marriage Story, their lawyers, especially Laura Dern steal every scene they are in (Alan Alda and Ray Liotta play Driver's attorneys). Her wily, friendly, evil, slimy, caring performance will be shown in acting class for decades to come. She is so far in front of the rest of these nominees that this (along with Parasite for international film) is probably the largest lock of the night.

Unfortunately this category also includes the only major film that I skipped for this Oscars. Sorry, but I just can't bring myself to watch Clint Eastwood films.... If you're curious as to why, there's a pretty deep dive into a certain Sniper film a few years back on this blog...

My Ballot
Laura Dern - Marriage Story
Scarlett Johansson - Jojo Rabbit
Margot Robbie - Bombshell
Florence Pugh - Little Women

My Pick to Win
Laura Dern - Marriage Story

Shamefully Snubbed
Billie Lourd - Booksmart

Best Actress
Cynthia Erivo - Harriet
Scarlett Johannson - Marriage Story
Saoirse Ronan - Little Women
Charlize Theron - Bombshell
Renee Zellweger - Judy

This category puzzles me. I absolutely adore Scarlett and Saoirse in their respectful films. I would erupt with excitement if either of their names are called tomorrow night, but alas... A bunch of folks in Hollywood feel bad for calling Renee Zellweger fat and ugly and making her quit movies. She's back now so she gets an Oscar I guess..... Don't get me wrong, her movie is fine, but have you seen it? Yeah... it's fine..... shrug.....

My Ballot
Saoirse Ronan - Little Women
Scarlett Johannson - Marriage Story
Renee Zellweger - Judy
Cynthia Erivo - Harriet
Charlize Theron - Bombshell

My Pick to Win
Renee Zellweger - Judy

Shamefully Snubbed
Beanie Feldstein - Booksmart

Countdown to Oscar Night: Alternative Films

Best Animated Film
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
I Lost My Body
Klaus
Missing Link
Toy Story 4

At one point I had three animated films in my top 10 of 2019 (Klaus, Dragon 3, and Frozen 2). The quality line between traditional films and "cartoons" is blurring a bit more each year. Every movie on this list is worth the watch. I Lost My Body is especially groundbreaking with the maturity of its story and visuals. As far as picking a winner, this may be one of the hardest of the night. Does the Academy pick the best movie (Klaus), the most groundbreaking (I Lost My Body), the most tedious to produce (Missing Link), or the most successful (Toy Story 4)? I'm gonna follow the money I guess... Also, Frozen 2 was better than the first and is the best animated movie of 2019.... fight me.

My Ballot
Klaus
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
I Lost My Body
Toy Story 4
Missing Link

My Pick to Win
Toy Story 4

Shamefully Snubbed
Frozen 2

Best Documentary Feature
American Factory
The Cave
The Edge of Democracy
For Sama
Honeyland

Another list with some just plain essential films. Specifically For Sama and Honeyland do things that I've never seen before in films and are both beautiful and heartbreaking. That being said, my least favorite of the bunch (American Factory) is my pick to win. The Obamas produced the movie, so I don't think the Academy will be able to resist an appearance from Barack or Michelle.

My Ballot
For Sama
Honeyland
The Edge of Democracy
American Factory

My Pick to Win
American Factory

Shamefully Snubbed
Fyre

Best International Feature
Corpus Cristi
Honeyland
Les Miserables
Pain and Glory
Parasite

This is the only category where I have missed seeing two of the nominees. Les Miserables and Corpus Cristi are only in big cities right now...  Oh well. The nominees I have seen are pretty great, but this is an uneventful category because it is the easiest pick of the night: even if Parasite wins nothing else, it has this one sewn up.

My Ballot
Parasite
Pain and Glory
Honeyland

My Pick to Win
Parasite

Shamefully Snubbed
I Lost My Body

Countdown to Oscar Night: Sight and Sound

Best Makeup & Hair-styling
Bombshell
Joker
Judy
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
1917

I'm going to be brief with these because they are many and I am tired. I don't think the Academy will be able to resist the impeccable job done imitating Fox News personalities.

My Ballot
Bombshell
Joker
Judy
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
1917

My Pick to Win
Bombshell

Shamefully Snubbed
Little Women

Best Costume Design
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
Joker
Little Women
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

This award usually goes to the gaudiest costumes, but most of this year's nominees are muted and stylish rather than loud and obnoxious. I have a bad feeling that Jojo is going to get shut out on Oscar night, but this is probably it's best bet.

My Ballot
Jojo Rabbit
Little Women
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Joker
The Irishman

My Pick to Win
Little Women

Shamefully Snubbed
See You Yesterday

Best Production Design
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Parasite

Quentin Tarantino and his team recreated 1969 Hollywood. If that doesn't win award from this crowd of voters I'm not sure what will.

My Ballot
Jojo Rabbit
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Parasite
1917
The Irishman

My Pick to Win
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Shamefully Snubbed
Pain and Glory

Best Sound Editing
Ford v Ferrari
Joker
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

I think 1917 sweeps both of these categories. At least it deserves this one...

My Ballot
1917
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Ford v Ferrari
Joker
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

My Pick to win
1917

Shamefully Snubbed
Shazam!

Best Sound Mixing
Ad Astra
Ford v Ferrari
Joker
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

On the other hand, 1917 has no business winning this one (save for the single "Wayfaring Stranger" scene). Uncut Gems should have been nominated in an overwhelming amount of categories, but this oversight is an abomination. The Safdie brothers did things with sound that I've never experience before.

My Ballot
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Ford v Ferrari
1917
Ad Astra
Joker

My Pick to Win
1917

Shamefully Snubbed
Uncut Gems

Countdown to Oscar Night: Filmmaking

Best Cinematography
The Irishman
Joker
The Lighthouse
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Roger Deakins strikes again. It took our greatest living cinematographer 23 years and 14 nominations after his first Oscar nomination (The Shawshank Redemption) to win his first Oscar (Blade Runner 2049), but it's only going to take him two more years to win his second. The Lighthouse is the only film nominated that approaches a groundbreaking level of art with its visuals, but it just doesn't have the Academy love that I expect to see for Mendes' day in war. With a lesser man behind the camera 1917 could have just been a neat visual trick, but Deakins' deft hand elevates it well above the rest.

My Ballot
1917
The Lighthouse
Joker
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
The Irishman

My Pick to Win
1917

Shamefully Snubbed
The Last Black Man in San Francisco

Best Editing
Ford v Ferrari
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
Joker
Parasite

As with many years, this category will be a really important in previewing what the big categories could look like. With front-runner 1917 out of the running, predicting this one is a bit complicated (side note- Birdman, the other recent "one-take" Oscar darling was also not nominated for editing. I lamented then that voters must have assumed the film was actually shot in one take with no editing. Obviously this isn't true and their lack of inclusion is puzzling.). If Ford or Jojo win here, I think you can safely say 1917 has Best Picture sewed up. On the other hand, any of the other three winning (especially Parasite) could spell a possible spoiler for the top prize.

My Ballot
Jojo Rabbit
Parasite
Ford v Ferrari
The Irishman
Joker

My Pick to Win
Parasite

Shamefully Snubbed
1917

Best Visual Effects
Avengers: Endgame
The Irishman
The Lion King
1917
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Until very recently this award went to that rare film that had groundbreaking visual effects (think 2001, Star Wars, The Abyss), but now all big money films have near flawless effects. This fact changes the recent winners into the most artistically and uniquely applied effects rather than most groundbreaking (Life of Pi, Blade Runner 2049, First Man). With that in mind, I really think The Lion King is going to win this one. Which stinks because it is easily the worst movie nominated, but I guess it's pretty....

My Ballot
1917
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Avengers: Endgame
The Irishman
The Lion King

My Pick to Win
The Lion King

Shamefully Snubbed
Spider-man: Far From Home

Countdown to Oscar Night: Music

Best Original Score
Joker
Little Women
Marriage Story
1917
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

I gotta admit scores were a bit disappointing this year. A great score can take a great movie and make it timeless, and I just felt that the movies of 2019 either rehashed familiar themes (Star Wars, Marvel, Disney movies) or went with quiet elevator music (1917). Randy Newman's beautiful theme from Marriage Story was my early pick in this category, but Hildur GuĂ°nadóttir’s score for Joker is one of the main elements that elevates the movie above our usual comic-book normalcy. It's a shame more people haven't seen The Last Black Man in San Francisco because it has the best music moments of the year.

My Ballot
Joker
Marriage Story
Little Women
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
1917

My Pick to Win
Joker

Shamefully Snubbed
The Last Black Man in San Francisco

Best Original Song
"I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away" - Toy Story 4
"(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" - Rocketman
"I'm Standing With You" - Breakthrough
"Into the Unknown" - Frozen 2
"Stand Up" - Harriet

Ugh.... this category....  What should be one of the my favorite categories is so troubling every single year: Forgettable songs from familiar faces in Toy Story 4 and Rocketman; terrible films like Breakthrough being recognized on Hollywood's biggest night; and the worst song from Frozen 2. Cynthia Erivo's powerful ballad from Harriet is really the only deserving nominee, but none of these nominees include the best music moments of 2019 because they aren't "original" songs ("Being Alive" from Marriage Story and "Wayfaring Stranger" from 1917). I'm pretty sure this is a two-horse race between the uber-catchy five notes of "Into the Unknown" and the Academy's unrelenting desire to see famous non-movie people accept this award. I'd actually be disappointed when Elton John gives his acceptance speech if they had nominated the real best original song from 2019: "The Next Right Thing".

My Ballot
"Stand Up" - Harriet
"Into the Unknown" - Frozen 2
"I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away" - Toy Story 4
"(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" - Rocketman
"I'm Standing With You" - Breakthrough

My Pick to Win
"(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" - Rocketman

Shamefully Snubbed
"The Next Right Thing" - Frozen 2
